Calculating the Size of your Metal Plaque Signs

Length x Width = Number of Square Inches. For example, if you have a decal that is 3” x 5” simply multiply 3 x 5 = 15 square inches.

Cast Plaque Signs

Metal signs are given a moisture resistant protective finish to keep them fresh and rust or corrosion-resistant. With a special type of paint, they are decorated and sealed with a protective coat of paint that helps to withstand the sun’s harsh UV rays.

They have the option of using thinner or thicker metal. The thicker metal is more durable and slightly more expensive, but overall, they cost a lot less than some alternative methods of signage available on the market.

Cast metals are used more frequently as they are less expensive, and they are easier to cast or mold than bronze.

Options on Materials

There are a myriad of materials that you can find online, though today I’m only going to deal with cast metal letters or solid lettering materials.

Aluminum

Cost-effective, lightweight, durable. This is available in both cast and cut options. It has a low melting temperature, and is a favorite for lettering, is less expensive than bronze or brass, and is lighter weight as well, while remaining incredibly strong and durable. Signs from aluminum are available brushed, polished, and painted, and will last for decades or even centuries if well-maintained.

Steel

It is very strong and is usually done in flat cut as it is not considered good as metal wall letters. It is available in stainless steel as well, which has the added advantage of not being susceptible to rust. Cold or hot-rolled steel can also be cut with a water jet or router, and can either be left untreated for a natural look or painted to prevent rust. Stainless steel letter finishes include either brushed or polished.

Copper

This is also typically flat cut. To keep copper from oxidizing, it needs to have a clear coat applied, similar to both aluminum and bronze. If you want a natural oxidized look (where copper turns a bluish-green over time), that is also available. This can be polished, brushed, or oxidized (darkened).

Brass

An alloy of copper and zinc, have been around since the Roman era, but modern brass has around 1% tin added to alleviate “zincification” of the metal. Many companies that cast brass allow up to 2% lead to make the casting process easier. We don’t. Our brass products have 0% lead, and thus comply with any and all laws worldwide concerning lead. This can be brushed, polished, or oxidized (darkened), which can also be brushed or polished.

Bronze

This is possibly one of the oldest forms. It has been used since antiquity (whenever that was…it was a long time ago) for signs, although plaques were all the rage in the Roman empire, not so much with bronze. This is an alloy of tin and copper and is suited for casting, and not usually found as a flat-cut like aluminum or steel. It is higher priced, and therefore it saves material to cast the lettering versus cutting them from a flat sheet. It is available in brushed, oxidized (darkened), polished, or with a patina finish (green-ish oxidized look).

Color Tones

They have many color options, as well. Although one may think that they tend to be a dull green, golden or rustic brown tone, in fact they come in a rainbow of shade varieties and tones. Tones like copper, pewter, ivory and other nuances are bound to get respect from all those who come knock at your door. All of them are created to show that a person of wealth and character lives inside.

Signage Size

Sizes are variable. You may want or need a custom design. If you can imagine it, we can prepare it for you. Those of your desired dimensions will be made and prepared for your satisfaction. If you are choosing a lawn plaque, the right size depends on your outdoor decor. It needs to fit in, neither resembling a billboard nor being overwhelmed by huge trees or bushes. It needs to fit into the existing decor and landscape. Custom design work may be necessary, which means that you need to have a professional in your corner when you are considering the most fitting look.

Plaque Signage Durability

Do you prefer brushed bronze, aluminum, brass, or stainless steel? Whatever material you choose, a protective finish may be applied to help keep your attractive new signage looking fresh and long-lasting. Designed to prevent wear and tear and shield your sign against the elements of nature, the beauty behind these items is not only skin deep.

Made of weather resistant material, they may have a satin gloss and protective coating. They are most usually exposed to at least some of the natural elements, so they are treated and prepared to look fresh for long periods of time.

Use them and they will last a good many years. This also subliminally reassures the customer or business partner that doing business with such a person is close to risk free. They were obviously in good financial standing to invest in them to begin with, and intend on staying around well into the foreseeable future.

Plaque Sign Care

Plaques can withstand the elements of snow, rain, moisture, heat, dryness, buffeting winds and even abuse. They are strong, shiny, and treated to outlive even human beings! The best way to care for them is to keep them dusted off, wiped with a damp cloth, and occasionally lightly polished with a mild metal cleaner.
