Calculating the Size of your Plastic Signage

Length x Width = Number of Square Inches. For example, if you have a decal that is 3” x 5” simply multiply 3 x 5 = 15 square inches.

Making and Printing of Plastic Sign

Signs that have traditionally been produced with paint, such as internally illuminated polycarbonate displays are now imprinted either directly to the polycarbonate or onto translucent decal material and laminated to the polycarbonate. The result is the ability to produce photographic quality at very affordable pricing.

Sign makers now may have two main types of digital printers. The first to be developed was the roll-to-roll printer in which one could print vinyl banner material or various types of vinyl materials that could be printed, laminated, and applied to rigid materials such as PVC signs, MDO plywood, or plastic yard displays.

And with the advent a few years back of the flatbed UV digital printer, more and more are now able to press almost anything that can be printed as long as it’s very flat. The flatbed printer also has made it faster to produce rigid signage, creating a one-step printing process. On the roll-to-roll print machines, producers printed the vinyl material, laminated, after it cured overnight, then mounted to the rigid substrate. Three steps versus one.

And the inks have also improved, both ecologically and durability-wise. It has been found that in our area, the inks have lasted 8 to 10 years, and that has been since the late ’90’s when many jumped into digital pressing. The new inks are even better. And they’re using less toxic chemicals than they used to formulate the inks with, so they’re better for the environment.

Types of Plastic Materials

While there are many types of plastic that sign prints can be made with, I’ll cover a few of the most popular types sign makers use.

(Drum roll) – Corrugated Plastic, or more technically, fluted Polypropylene – fluted polypro for short.

Brand names included Coroplast™, Plasticor™, and Corex™, among other names. Because fluted polypro is a polypropylene plastic, it doesn’t easily accept ink, but due to it’s cost-effectiveness, the manufacturers of this plastic came up with “corona-treating” to make the plastic receptive to ink for up to a year. Corona-treating is essentially a heat treatment of the surface of the plastic to make it ink receptive so you can make your sigange on this very cheap material.

Corrugated plastic is a non-yellowing plastic that’s used mostly outdoors, but also can be used indoors, although because the flutes are somewhat visible on your sign prints, it’s not favored for close-up viewing. Uses for these include political, real estate, bootleg, directional, yard or garage sale, property markers, warning, and towing signs, and a host of other uses I’m not going to take the time to mention here (besides, I just can’t remember everything I’ve seen corrugated plastic used for).

Fluted polypropylene also comes in a variety of thicknesses, the most popular being 4mm and 6mm. It’s also readily available in 2mm, 3mm, 8mm 10mm, and 12mm thicknesses. Corrugated plastic is also quite chemical resistant. We used to clean ink off the plastic using lacquer thinner or MEK (methylethyl ketone) with no damage to the plastic. You cannot due this with polystyrene or polycarbonate plastic print displays.

PVC, or technically, Polyvinyl Chloride.

It is a solid, smooth, non-yellowing plastic that also has a variety of use and thicknesses. Because it is solid, it is also costlier than corrugated plastic. It comes in a variety of thicknesses up to 1/2″ thick, although the 1/8″ or 4mm thickness is probably the most popular for screen pressing.

PVC is durable in cold weather as well. It is considered shatter-resistant to around negative 20°F (polypropylene is similar, but may be resistant at even colder temps). They may be used for real estate, fence markers, point-of-purchase (because of its smooth finish), and warning signs (also known as OSHA).

Polystyrene

Because it yellows (although there are now non-yellowing polystyrene sheets available), it is more often used for indoor, and because you can purchase it as thin as .02″ thickness, it is popular for laminating digital graphics for retail and trade show displays.

Other ones we’ve used polystyrene for are interior warning (OSHA), real estate (if both sides are covered with a laminated durable digital print), and point of purchase displays.

Polyethylene

Polyethylene (PE) and hi-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a durable, cold-resistant, non-yellowing smooth plastic that accepts the appropriate inks or digital prints nicely. Popular thicknesses for this material are 1/16″ and 1/8″, but it can be purchased readily up to 1/2″ thick. You can purchase thicker materials from some manufacturers, but you’d likely have to place a minimum purchase of 50,000 lbs or more.

Polyethylene holds the colored dye well, allowing it to stay fresh and true to color for longer periods of time than some other sign material options. Plastic is also less expensive compared to others. The synthetic material is neither difficult nor costly to produce as metal or wood. Modern techniques have actually lessened the cost of production, passing along the cost savings to you.

Dimension and Shapes

Most can be made in various dimensions or shapes. The most common shapes include rectangular shapes which can be posted on a gate, fence, or in a frame. They can be from thin to thick – from .001“ to ½“ thick or more. Some materials like polycarbonate come in rolls, but most come in sheets, the most common size being 4′ x 8′.

Standard available pre-cut sheet sizes are 24x 24in., 18x24in. and 12x18in., with other sizes available when required being sheared to size. The smaller rectangular shapes which are ideal for posting on a chain link fence are most often 10×14.in, 4x8in., and 3x6in. Other available shapes include circles, triangles, octagons, badges, and shields. Of course, custom dies can be made to make whatever you want.

Sign Installation and Permit

This depends on what type of outdoor advertising you’re doing. Typically, if a sign is temporary, like a banner or small bootleg sign, no permit or license is needed, at least not in most areas. You’ll want to check with your local sign police, er, I mean county or municipal building department to learn what your local code requires.

If you are simply putting a “Home For Sale” sign or a political campaign sign in your yard, there will be no requirement in most areas for a permit. Check with the local building department in your area, though, for clarification of the laws for your town, city, or county.

If the sign exceeds a certain height and/or size, it will most certainly require an engineers sign off on your blueprint or drawings, as these signs require specific types and/or thicknesses of steel as well as a specific amount of ballast (concrete) around the base of the pole in the ground. There may also be varying types of soil or rock in your area, and this could affect how much ballast weight or volume your sign system requires.

State and Federal regulations and laws require permits so we can keep track of the number, use, location, spacing, and maintenance of signs. This also helps us ensure signs are properly maintained, removed when they have served their purpose, do not clutter our roadsides, and do not create a safety hazard.

They also require permits for signs based on zones in many municipalities. If you are in a commercial and industrial zone, there are usually fairly relaxed regulations on the size of sign you can put up, but if the signs get over a certain square footage, engineering requirements will need to be met.

Sign Care

The products are ideal for inside and for outside usage. Produced from 8mm plastic, they are sturdy and easy to keep clean. All you need is a damp cloth to keep them looking fresh, bright and highly visible.

While weather or vandalism is not major concerns with them, if they are destroyed, they are inexpensive to replace, unlike metal or wooden signs. With polycarbonate or high impact acrylic back-lighted displays, all you need to do is remove the frame and replace the plastic sign then insert in the display frame.

Durability of Plastic Signs

Because they are typically made of thick acrylic or other plastics such as melamines or other poly-type plastics, they are nearly weatherproof and color resistant.

The hard and brittle polystyrene signposts of the past have been replaced with softer items made of polyethylene and polypropylene and even polystyrene can be purchased now that is impact resistant, and the new hard plastics like polycarbonate are more durable than many of the original plastics such as acrylic. These newer materials stay firm in the hottest of summer heat waves and don’t crack or break in bitter cold spells in the coldest winters or harshest storms.

Extremely durable in both hot and cold weather, these are very tough. If you are worried about them melting in the heat or bending and breaking in the cold, there’s really nothing to fear. Even zero and below temperatures do not destroy, warp or ruin your strong display.
